    Chamber of Commerce

  1. A common way that freelancers acquire medical insurance is through the chamber of commerce. The chamber of commerce has local offices throughout the country that exist to support local and small businesses, including freelancers.
  2. National Association for the Self-Employed

  3. A leading organization that helps freelancers obtain health insurance is the National Association for the Self-Employed. This organization provides a number of benefits to entrepreneurs, including health care coverage.
  4. Freelancers Unions

  5. One place that many freelancers can go to find health insurance is through a Freelancers Union. For example, in New York, the Freelancers Union provides a variety of benefits that include health insurance, disability insurance and life insurance.
  6. Considerations

  7. In order to qualify for health insurance through unions and other organizations, freelancers must often meet certain eligibility requirements. For example, the individual must be an independent contractor, self-employed or a sole proprietor. Individuals who work full-time as a W-2 employee are not considered freelancers.
  8. COBRA

  9. Individuals who make the switch to freelancing from a 9-to-5 job can also consider relying on COBRA to maintain their health insurance. COBRA allows former employees to keep company health benefits in the event that they resign or are terminated. Unfortunately, COBRA benefits only last for up to 18 months.
