FDA approves a new drug for major depression

It’s called vilazodone (Viibryd), and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for major depression, which is depression severe enough to interfere with a person’s ability to work, sleep, study, eat, or enjoy once pleasurable activities. The manufacturer says it’s less likely than some other antidepressants to cause sexual side effects or weight gain. But it’s unclear to us that it’s more effective or safer than any of the many antidepressants already on the market. And, like all new drugs, it by definition has a very short safety record. So we say proceed with caution until more is known.
