Consumer Wish List for Health Care Services

In the holiday season it’s important to wonder and think about what consumers would like to see change with health care and health insurance.

Here are just a few predictions of things consumers would like to see change in 2012:

Transparency. There is little transparency in how hospitals set rates for health care services and consumers are typically given a run-around when trying to seek that information. More transparency with health care costs will help consumers become well-informed.

Coordination. Health care reform works to create better coordination between health care providers with Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). But many hospitals aren’t participating in the program and consumers would be better if hospitals shared information.

Security. As Electronic Health Records (EHRs) have grown in popularity so have data breaches with personal patient information. In 2012, hospitals and health care providers must work to protect any private information to cut back the number of data breaches.

Easier management. Consumers want to be able to manage their health care bills like they manage their cell phone bill.

Education. Health insurance is hard to understand. In 2012, health insurance companies should work to better educate consumers about their health insurance policy and how to use it properly.
