New York insurer eyes greater Midwest presence with acquisition

USI Insurance in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., acquired an Itasca, Ill.-based property-casualty and employee benefits operation.

The Euclid Insurance retail property-casualty and employee benefits division specializes in commercial property-casualty and employee benefits insurance for middle-market companies and personal lines insurance for individuals throughout the Midwest.

Euclid has about $7.3 million in annual revenue.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Euclid retail business is a great complement to our existing presence in the Greater Chicago area,” said Michael J. Sicard, chairman, president and CEO of USI, in a statement. “

State Challenges to Medicaid Laws Have Hill to Climb

The nation’s Medicaid program faces daunting challenges in 2012 not the least of which is a Supreme Court review of whether the Obama administration can require states to accept millions more people onto their Medicaid rolls or lose some of their federal funding.

Recently, I Glenn Cohen of the Harvard Law School and James F. Blumstein of the Vanderbilt Law School evaluated the upcoming high court hearing and whether the states challenging the Affordable Care Act’s mandate have a leg to stand on. Their comments appeared in the January issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The new health care law mandates that state Medicaid plans provide coverage for everyone under the age of 65 with incomes of 133 percent of the federal poverty level and below. To

Tens of thousands riot across Greece

The majority of the Greek violence has been concentrated in the city centre of Athens. Tens of thousands have rallied in the Greek capital, throwing flares and lumps of marble, fighting with riot police and setting buildings ablaze. There have been numerous injuries and riot police have fired tear gas to try and disperse the protesters. Similar protests have also spread to the holiday hotspots of Corfu and Crete.
